Preventive Dentistry

Prevention of dental disease is at the heart of our philosophy at Triangle Dental.

For children
Our Preventive Dental Unit is a facility dedicated to teaching children and their parents about caring for their teeth for life, including advice on the most effective ways of brushing, and on the good (and bad) things to eat and drink. The unit is designed especially with children in mind, and is decorated and furnished to create a relaxing non-clinical environment. There is a range of models, toys and animal teeth that children can play with as part of their learning experience.

Fissure Sealing

Fissure sealing is a quick and absolutely pain-free treatment aimed at preventing decay. A white plastic coating is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth. It sets hard in about 20 seconds and the patient is able to eat and drink as normal straight after the treatment. This dramatically reduces the risk of decay appearing in the future by filling in the natural pits and fissures of the teeth, thus reducing the change of food debris and plaque building up. This means less chance of fillings being required in the future.

Fluoride treatment
On teeth where there appears to be the earliest stages of decay appearing a fluoride treatment can be applied. This is a gel that is simply painted on to the teeth. This greatly reduces the chance of the decay turning in to a cavity in the future, especially when the patient maintains good oral hygiene (ie good brushing!) and is careful not to eat or drink sweet or sugary things in the future.

For adults
The dentists, and especially our team of hygienists, are able to offer advice on the various types of oral hygiene aids that are available, and demonstrate the most effective ways of using them. These include manual and electric toothbrushes, interdental brushes, floss and tape, toothpaste and mouthwashes. A range of these products is available to buy at the practice.

At Triangle we recommend regular treatment sessions with one of our team of hygienists, who are able to remove build-ups of plaque and tartar and thus reduce the chance of gum inflammation and gum disease developing. This treatment also gets rid of unsightly stains and greatly improves the look of your smile.

Sore and bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease, and our team of hygienists are able to provide treatment to correct this. They are also able to advise on the best ways of keeping the teeth and gums clean to minimise the risk of these problems re-occurring.

Some patients have a higher risk of decay and gum disease developing, including people with certain medical conditions, or those who have a weakened immune system. Our hygienists are able to individually tailor a preventive programme to keep the risks of these diseases to a minimum.
